Instant gas hot water system problems are super-frustrating at the best of times – and yet they somehow always seem to happen at the worst times!
Before we get into the most common ones you’re likely to ever experience, it’s worth knowing just how widespread these systems have become. Gas hot water is now used by almost half of all Australian households – and among those, instantaneous hot water system units have overtaken storage systems as the preferred choice in most states.
Why’s that? Instant gas hot water is valued for:
- Energy efficiency
- Endless hot water supply
- And slick, compact size.
But like any system, they have their failure points … and here they are. The 7 most common issues Brisbane households run into – and what to do about each one.
1. No hot water at all
The most alarming problem, and often the simplest to diagnose.
With instant hot water not working at all, the cause is usually one of a handful of things:
- A gas supply interruption
- A tripped isolator switch
- A dead pilot light (on older units)
- A fault code on the unit’s display panel.
CAN YOU FIX IT YOURSELF?: Possibly.
Check these first:
- Confirm your gas supply is on and other gas appliances in the home are working
- Check the isolator switch at the unit hasn’t tripped
- Check the unit’s display for a fault code and cross-reference with the manual
- If you have an older unit with a pilot light, follow the manufacturer’s relight instructions.
If none of those resolves it, you need a licensed hot water plumber – gas components require a licensed gasfitter to repair legally.
2. Water is lukewarm instead of hot
You’re getting water … but it’s never quite hot enough. This usually points to an incorrectly set thermostat, a partially blocked inlet filter, or a flow rate that’s too high for the unit to heat effectively.
CAN YOU FIX IT YOURSELF?: Partly.
Check these first:
- Adjust the temperature setting on the unit or controller (most units allow this)
- Reduce the flow rate at the tap slightly – instant systems need sufficient dwell time to heat water properly.
If neither helps, the inlet filter may need cleaning or the unit may be undersized for your household demand – both worth discussing with a plumber.
3. Hot water runs cold mid-shower
The old ‘cold water sandwich’ – a burst of cold water interrupting an otherwise hot shower – is one of the most commonly reported instantaneous gas hot water problem complaints.
It happens when a tap is turned off and back on quickly, causing the unit to briefly deliver unheated water sitting in the pipes before the system fires up again.
CAN YOU FIX IT YOURSELF?: Not really.
This is largely a design characteristic of instantaneous systems rather than a fault. A plumber can advise on buffer solutions or recirculating systems if it’s a significant issue in your home.
4. Unit ignites but burner shuts off quickly
The system fires up, you get a brief burst of hot water, then it shuts down again.
This is often caused by a blocked burner, a faulty flame sensor, or inadequate gas pressure reaching the unit.
CAN YOU FIX IT YOURSELF?: No.
Burner and gas pressure issues must be assessed and repaired by a licensed gasfitter. Attempting to adjust gas components yourself is illegal and dangerous.
5. Fluctuating water temperature
Water that swings between hot and cold unpredictably – particularly noticeable when someone else in the house uses water simultaneously – usually points to:
- Flow sensor issues
- A failing thermostat
- Or competing demand across the household exceeding the unit’s capacity.
CAN YOU FIX IT YOURSELF?: Somewhat.
Staggering hot water use across the household can help with demand issues. But for sensor or thermostat faults, a licensed plumber is required.
6. The unit is making unusual noises
Clicking, banging, rumbling, whistling, or any unusual noise from an instant gas hot water unit is a sign worth paying attention to.
Clicking during startup is normal – it’s the ignition firing. Persistent clicking that doesn’t result in ignition, or banging and rumbling during operation, can indicate ignition failure, scale buildup on the heat exchanger, or debris in the burner assembly.
CAN YOU FIX IT YOURSELF?: Not really.
Startup clicking is normal and not a concern. Anything beyond that – particularly persistent ignition failure or rumbling during operation – needs a plumber. Heat exchanger issues in particular can escalate quickly and are not a DIY repair.
7. Water leaking from the unit
Visible water around or beneath the unit is never something to ignore.
Leaks from an instant gas hot water system typically originate from:
- Loose connections
- A failing pressure relief valve
- Internal component deterioration.
CAN YOU FIX IT YOURSELF?: No.
Turn off the water supply to the unit and call a plumber promptly. A leaking pressure relief valve in particular can indicate dangerous system pressure and needs immediate professional attention.
When to call a hot water plumber
As a general rule – anything involving gas components, internal parts, pressure valves or fault codes beyond a basic reset requires a licensed gasfitter or plumber.
In Queensland, it’s illegal to carry out gas work without a licence, and attempting repairs on gas systems puts both you and your household at serious risk.
