“An honest assessment from the people who work on them”

There are brands we install regularly, brands we install occasionally, and brands we find ourselves recommending time and time again when a customer asks what we’d put in our own home. That’s why an AquaMAX hot water system review from a team that installs and services these units across Brisbane is going to read differently to a spec sheet – and that’s the point.

Here’s our honest take on the brand, the range – and where AquaMAX really fits in the competitive Australian market.

About AquaMAX

Established in Melbourne in 1988, AquaMAX has grown from a small business into a market mainstay.

AquaMAX was actually the first Australian company to get a hot water system on the market with a 5-star energy rating and a 10-year warranty – which tells you something about where the brand’s priorities have always sat. The hot water brand is Australian-made and Rheem-owned, having been acquired in 2009, which means it benefits from the backing of one of the largest hot water manufacturers in the country while retaining its own product identity and manufacturing standards.

AquaMAX specialises in gas and electric storage hot water systems. They don’t manufacture heat pump hot water or solar hot water units – but that’s not a weakness. It just means they’re focused on what they do. And what they do, they do well.

The range

Gas storage: AquaMAX’s gas range centres on the G Series – stainless steel units available in 270L, 340L, and 390L capacities.

  • Each of these models has received a 5-star AGA rating, reflecting their high energy efficiency.
  • The flagship G390SS is a 155L storage unit suited to households of up to 6 people, running at mains pressure with fast recovery.
  • The G270SS at 130L suits households of 2-4. All gas hot water models are outdoor-only and available in both natural gas and LPG configurations.

Electric storage: The electric storage range includes units from 50 litres up to 400 litres, with popular models like the AquaMAX 315 and AquaMAX 200 commonly installed in family homes and investment properties.

The tanks are internally lined with vitreous enamel to resist corrosion and operate at mains pressure. And they’re real workhorses – straightforward, widely available, and easy to replace like-for-like when an older unit gives out.

Our ratings

We’ve thought deeply about how to rate these products because we want them to genuinely reflect our experience in hot water installation, hot water repairs, and recommending AquaMAX systems across Brisbane properties just like yours.

1. Energy efficiency – 8.5/10

The stainless steel range exceeds MEPS (Minimum Energy Performance Standards) by up to 27%, and every gas model in the range carries a 5-star AGA rating.

The electric hot water range is less remarkable on efficiency – as with all electric storage systems – but performs to standard and benefits from off-peak tariff compatibility.

2. Reliability & build quality – 9/10

The stainless steel cylinder is the standout feature across the premium range. Stainless steel units do not include a sacrificial anode to prevent corrosion (because they don’t need one), meaning anode inspections and replacements are not needed – and non-anode units deliver purer water to the kitchen and bathroom.

In Brisbane’s climate, where system longevity is affected by water quality and heat, this matters. The enamel range is more modest but still solid at the price point.

3. Value for money – 8.5/10

AquaMAX sits in the mid-range on purchase price and delivers above that level on performance and longevity. Their units are particularly valued for:

  • A straightforward installation
  • Ease of replacement
  • Availability of spare parts.

All of that keeps your costs lower – from the moment you install one all the way through the life of the system. When we’re called to repair an AquaMAX unit, parts are accessible, and the system is well-documented.

4. Warranty – 9/10

The stainless steel gas models carry a 12-year cylinder warranty. But the stainless steel tank is actually designed to last more than 12 years.

The enamel electric range carries a shorter warranty period – but it’s backed by Rheem’s national service network, which means support is available across Brisbane and beyond without difficulty.

5. Ease of installation & serviceability – 9/10

From an installer’s perspective, AquaMAX systems are well-engineered and therefore straightforward to work with – so yes, we do like them!

Replacement jobs – particularly like-for-like electric swaps – are efficient. Gas installations require a licensed gas fitter as always, but the systems are well-designed for the process. Parts availability across Brisbane is excellent.

6. Brand support & parts availability – 8.5/10

Being part of the Rheem group means AquaMAX benefits from a national parts and service network. In practice, this means we can source components quickly and support older units without the delays that affect some smaller or imported brands. And that’s a big tick from us in our AquaMAX review.

Overall score: 8.8 / 10

AquaMAX hot water system reviews across the industry consistently reflect what we see in the field – a brand that delivers reliable, efficient, well-built systems at a price point that makes sense for the majority of Brisbane households.

The stainless steel gas range is genuinely impressive and a go-to recommendation among our Brisbane hot water plumbers for households wanting long service life and strong efficiency from a gas system, and the electric range is honest, dependable, and widely supported.

The absence of heat pump and solar options means AquaMAX isn’t a one-stop solution for every customer – but for gas and electric storage, the AquaMAX hot water system range is as strong as anything in the Australian market at its price point.
